Pete Went在被《Kerrang!》采訪時，解稱歌曲來源于聖經中大衛大戰歌利亞的故事，想要寫首關于有些奇怪的能人。

《Centuries》取樣了樂團自創唱片廠牌DCD2 Records旗下女歌手Lolo翻唱自Suzanne Vega的1987年暢銷曲《Tom's Diner》。Patrick Stump闡述樂隊想向流行歌曲文化中注入如"Tom's Diner"中的元素。

Fall Out Boy樂隊和Paramore樂隊2014年9月4日結束monumentour，Fall Out Boy樂隊用摩爾斯電碼發布預告的歌曲名稱。英國廣播公司第一電台于2014年9月8日發布歌曲，第二天全球正式發布。
