公司标志
Elsevier的标志原屬于Elzevir printer并沿用至今，上面描繪了一個老人站在葡萄藤纏繞的榆樹下，并題寫了拉丁文Non Solus（不孤單）。它的含義至今仍存有争議。這個标志由Isaac Elzevir（Lowys的兒子）于1620年首次引入，并從此印在所有Elzevir的出版物上。毫無疑問，Elzevir家族對他們的标志充滿自豪，其想要表達的含義卻不為人知。雖然大多數學者認同榆樹代表知識之樹，他們對相互纏繞的葡萄藤的含義卻無法達成共識。
巴黎圖書管理員Adry在1806年提出，榆樹和葡萄藤象征着Isaac和Abraham Elzevir兄弟之間的紐帶，而那個老人，也就是隐者，象征着研究的隐秘性。現代藝術曆史學家Lucy Schlüter則提出了一個更加令人信服的解釋。她認為樹下的老者代表一個智慧的學者、一個哲學家——令人想起Erasmus描繪的蘇格拉底，坐在鄉間的樹下帶來碩果累累、啟發人心的演講。
在這個意義上，相互纏繞的樹和葡萄藤代表着一種産生果實的關系——因此也傳達了一種寓意。如同Erasmus所言有關樹和葡萄藤的傳統隐喻：“正如葡萄藤，雖然在所有的樹中最加出衆，卻仍然需要莖杆、樹樁或者其他無法結實的樹的支撐，強者和博學之人也需要平凡者的幫助。”
這樣看來，這個标志代表着傳統符号學中出版商和學者之間的象征關系。Non Solus的題詞則更加強化了這一信息——學者需要出版商像榆樹那樣提供堅實的支撐，而出版商也同樣需要葡萄藤來結出果實。出版商和學者都無法獨立得到果實，他們都需要對方。這也恰當地表示了Elsevier和它的作者們如今的關系——不是依賴，不是被依賴，而是相互依存。

2012年科學出版巨頭Elsevier因其過高的期刊價格招緻了科學家們的抵制運動，并迅速升級。運動開始後的九天内，有2600多名科學家（包括一些領域的權威）在thecostofknowledge.com上簽署請願書，他們承諾不再在Elsevier上發表論文，也不再為其他研究人員的研究做評審，也不會為該公司做其他任何形式的編輯工作。
一月底，英國劍橋大學數學家、菲爾茲獎獲得者Timothy Gowers公開宣布抵制Elsevier，而此前類似的舉動隻在私下開展。Timothy Gowers對Elsevier的抵制行為很快就得到了衆多科學家們的支持，一個用于宣傳和簽名的網站The Cost of Knowledge也被建立起來。在這個網站頁面的顯眼處，科學家們羅列了他們抵制Elsevier的原因：
他們對個人訂閱的期刊索取極高的費用，在這種高額的收費下，他們提供給購買者的唯一實際可行的選項是同意購買其他的成套服務，而其中有許多期刊是購買者不需要的。他們支持SOPA 、PIPA 、以及 The Research Works條款，其目的在于限制對信息的免費獲取。

SDOS(ScienceDirect OnSite)原名為EES (Elsevier Electronic Subscriptions) 。EES自1999 年1月起正式使用SDOS作為新名稱，以确保 Elsevier ScienceDirect一系列服務名稱的一緻性[另一屬同系列的服務為遠程載入模式 SD(ScienceDirect Online)，有别于當地内部網絡模式SDOS]。
