湖南賓館始建于1959年，1962年正式營業，是湖南省曆史最早、知名度和美譽度很高的賓館。建館至今，一直是省委、省政府接待客人的主要單位,曾接待過黨和國家三代領導人和多位外國元首及政要。
賓館毗鄰湖南烈士公園，院内鳥語花香、環境幽雅，屬于典型的“綠色賓館”；距火車站2公裡，距黃花機場26公裡，有多路公交汽車經過，交通十分便利。
賓館現有客房三棟，分别為一号樓、二号樓、三号樓，其中一号樓為蘇式建築，被長沙市政府列為“近現代保護建築”。
有高、中檔客房427間，床位778個，客房空間高、面積大、居住舒适；有大小會議室35個，可承接各種大小不同、規格不一的會議，其中“湖賓會議中心”，在省内中屬于面積最大、裝飾最豪華的會議廳，可同時容納800人開會。有格調高雅、裝飾豪華氣派的餐廳18個，可舉辦各種不同類型、檔次的宴會和酒會，可同時容納1500人就餐。另有商場購物、美容美發、物品寄存、桑拿按摩、酒吧咖啡、銀行存兌、郵電傳真、打字文印、寬帶上網等配套服務項目。
賓館因其雄厚的接待實力，經公開招标，分别被湖南省财政廳定為“省直單位一、二、三類會議定點接待單位”，被長沙市政府采購辦定為“長沙市會議接待定點單位”。
